Re-enactments
The 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry re-enactment season typically goes from March to November in which we participate in 15 to 20 events. These events include battle re-enactments, memorial ceremonies, parades, living histories, and occasionally educational demonstrations. The events vary from year to year and thus the locations vary as well but typically the events are in southeast PA, southern New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and northern Virginia.
The memorial ceremonies, parades, living histories, and educational demonstrations are events that last a few hours and take place on an evening during the week or during the day on a Saturday or Sunday.
The battle re-enactments are events that span a weekend from Friday afternoon/evening to Sunday afternoon. Friday is arrival. setup and "stepping into period" in the evening followed up with singing.
Saturday and Sunday, the camp is opened up to the public to walk through, ask questions, learn about history and experience camp life during the Civil War. With Camp life, one can expect to be sleeping in a tent, waking to reveille in the morning followed by cooking meals over a fire. Soldiers participate in dress parade followed by drill and a battle in the afternoon. The ladies of the unit look after camp and you might find them doing needle point as they are dressed in their Victorian dresses. At the end of day, one can relax with friends around the camp fire and participate in a song or two.
In the PA 69th, only men are permitted to take the field as a soldier being that no women are known to have "sneaked" into the ranks during the war. However women are permit to be in camp through an event or weekend but as civilian impressionists in period dress. Men are welcome as civilians as well.
Dues are currently $50/year for a full membership or $25/year for an associate membership. Full membership entitles a member to voting privileges and having event registration fees paid by the 69th. Associate membership entitles a member affiliation with the 69th but with no voting privileges and events must be paid by the member.
NOTE: Due to insurance liabilities, children under the age of 16 are not allowed to fire a musket and are only allowed on the field as musicians, flag bearers, etc.
